Cellophane was originally invented by the Swiss chemist Jacques .E. Brandenberger who got the idea one day at a restaurant when he saw a wine on one of the restaurant’s table cloths, he then decided that he would create a material that would repel liquids rather than absorb them. Although Brandenberger’s idea was originally to create a material which would not absorb water he quickly realized his research was helping him create a transparent sheet which would serve the same purpose while still helping to protect cloth materials. It took Brandenberger about ten years to the filmy material and another two years to start manufacturing it for public use; he built a machine for manufacturing his invention in 1912. The name ‘cellophane’ was Brandenberger’s own name for his creation; he got the name from the words ‘cellulose’ (which is the structural component of plants) and diaphane (which means transparent).

Is Cellophane Biodegradable?

Cellophane is one of the few bioplastics that are biodegradable. Biodegradation is the breakdown of organic matter by microorganisms such as bacteria or fungi. Cellophane is biodegradable because it is made from wood from plants; cellophane is majorly produced from easily grown corps like hemp or farmed trees. Cellophane takes about ten days to one month to degrade when buried, provided it is made from purely uncoated cellulose while cellophane made from coated mitrocellulose takes about two to three months to degrade.

Is Cellophane Different from Plastics?

It is a popular belief and impression that cellophane and plastic are one and the same thing or that cellophane is just the transparent version of plastic, this is by no means true. There are quite a few differences between cellophane and plastic. Cellophane is structurally composed of organic cellulose which is basically plant fibers while plastic is primarily made with chlorine, while some cellophane are made from wood particles, some plastics are made from oil. Cellophane is, as mentioned earlier, biodegradable and eco-friendly or environmentally friendly while plastic is non-biodegradable and therefore can be recycled.

Reason Why We Should Use Cellophane Instead of Traditional Plastic

Plastic can be molded; it is flexible, pliant and malleable while cellophane is none of these things. Cellophane can be penetrated by moisture or vapor while plastic can be penetrated by both. Cellophane is usually thicker than plastic wraps by about 40 gauges as cellophane is usually about 90-130 gauges while plastic is about 50-80 gauges.

Cellophane is easy to clean, glossy, and provides a barrier to help lock aroma in and keep any unwanted aromas out, it holds a fold well without unravelling and keeps flowers fresh such as our cheerful sunflowers and luscious blooming roses.
