One month after Valentine’s Day, on March 14, White Day is celebrated. Ever since it began in Japan in the year 1978, the tradition of celebrating White Day spread to all other Asian countries and eventually, it became a worldwide thing. However, it is still more popular among East Asian countries like Japan, South Korea, China, and Taiwan. What is this “White Day” all about? Let’s find out in the next section. You’ll also discover how White Day is celebrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is White Day?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Traditionally, Valentine’s Day used to be primarily about women giving presents, mostly chocolates, to men. Most men didn’t reciprocate the gesture and as you’d expect, this created tension between men and women. This was how White Day originated. Since there was no established tradition for men to reciprocate the gifts they received on Valentine’s Day, the National Confectionery Industry Association in Japan created one. A day for men to reciprocate and give gifts to women. It was set to be celebrated exactly one month after Valentine’s Day which was March 14. And guess what it was named? That’s right. White Day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did they call it “White” Day, though? Initially, it wasn’t called White Day. It was referred to as “Marshmallow Day” and that was because the confectionary companies publicized marshmallows as the staple gift to reciprocate the Valentine’s Day chocolates. However, since the marshmallows were white, the name switched to “White Day” which kind of sounds better than “Marshmallow Day”. The gifts also later evolved from just marshmallows to other white sweets and confectionaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned earlier, White Day celebrations first originated in Japan, in 1987 and as a result, it is more recognized as a holiday in Japan than in many other countries. Special events are usually arranged in honor of the holiday and people spend the day exchanging gifts with each other, especially the teenagers who wouldn’t pass up on an opportunity to impress someone they like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

White Day is also widely celebrated in South Korea with more emphasis on the quality and thoughtfulness of the gifts notwithstanding the monetary value. Hence, it’s more preferable to gift handmade and homemade items e.g handpicked flowers, customized gifts, and written messages than the traditional confectionaries. But, who says you can’t do both?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other countries, however, White Day may not be as widely celebrated as in Asian countries like Japan and South Korea. Regardless, White Day is not just a day for men to reciprocate the show of affection received during Valentine’s Day, but it’s also an opportunity to strengthen your relationships whether romantic or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Is It Celebrated?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To celebrate White Day with someone you love, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The keyword here is “thoughtful”. It doesn’t have to be overly expensive for your recipient to love it. People are usually more appreciative of gifts that they actually need and gifts that mean personal to them. Maybe you don’t consider yourself to be the thoughtful type, you have other options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Cook A Special Meal<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Are you fairly confident in your culinary abilities? Then, put them to use! Cooking a special meal on White Day is a more personal and intimate way to celebrate it. Picnics in the park, breakfast in bread or dinner night with the music up loud are all great ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Plan A Special Outing<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Planning a special outing on White Day is another awesome way to spend the day. Just make sure it’s something you both enjoy doing. It’s a golden opportunity to share more than a few special, memorable moments together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
