The Spring Lantern Festival marks the end of about 2 weeks of celebrations that begin with the lunar new year \u2013 the Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowhere is this traditional Chinese celebration than in Nanjing and Hong Kong. Hundreds of thousands of people gather to witness the spectacle of lantern displays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several legends about how the Chinese Lantern Festival came about and most of them revolve around worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most popular story dates back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC \u2013 220 AD). It says that the Lantern Festival celebrates the birthday of the Daoist god of fortune, Tianguan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other popular story states that on the 15<sup>th<\/sup> day of the first lunar month, spirits move around under the light of the full moon. People, therefore, light lanterns to help illuminate the spirits\u2019 way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do people do to celebrate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as the name of the festival suggests, lighting and appreciating lanterns is the main activity of the festival. People hang lanterns allover including households, shopping malls, parks, and in the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lanterns come in different shapes and sizes. Intricate lantern designs of floating colorful lanterns that come in the shape of floating lotuses, flying dragons, and spunky lions are created. Some lanterns have more symbolic designs, such as the sky lanterns. These lanterns represent hope, success, and happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, lanterns were used to signify peace after war. Nowadays they\u2019re commonly used for good wishes. Whether they\u2019re round or long, the lanterns symbolize good fortune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do the Chinese celebrate the Lantern Festival?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By now you\u2019re probably wondering, why is this festival important in the lunar calendar? Keep reading to find out more about the traditions of the Chinese Lantern Festival \u2013 a festival celebrated for more than 2,000 years now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People come together on the night of the Lantern Festival to celebrate with different activities. The most important and most prevalent traditions are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Lighting Lanterns<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When the festival comes, lanterns of different shapes and sizes are seen everywhere. The artwork vividly demonstrates traditional Chinese images and symbols such as flowers, birds, fruits, animals, people, and buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lighting lanterns is a way for people to pray that they have a smooth future and to express their best wishes for their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Guessing Lantern Riddles<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lantern owners write riddles on paper notes and paste them on the lanterns. If someone thinks they have the right answer to the riddle, they can pull the riddle off and go to the lantern owner to check. Correct answers are often rewarded with a small token.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Eating Tangyuan<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tangyuan is also called Yuanxiao if it\u2019s eaten for the Lantern Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These rice ball dumplings are made using glutinous rice flour and are stuffed with different fillings such as brown sugar, white sugar, sesame seeds, peanuts, walnuts, rose petals, bean paste, jujube paste, or a combination of any of these ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The round shape of the balls symbolizes wholeness and togetherness. The dumplings can either be fried, boiled, or steamed and are customarily served in fermented rice soup called tianjiu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Lion Dances<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This outstanding traditional folk dance can be dated back to the Three Kingdom Period (220 &#8211; 280). The Chinese regard the lion as a sign of bravery and believe that it can drive away evil spirits, thus protecting people and their livestock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lion dances are performed at the Lantern Festival to ward off evil and pray for good fortune and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the Lantern Festival a Chinese Valentine\u2019s Day?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lantern Festival is often celebrated on the 15<sup>th<\/sup> day of the first Chinese Lunar month. It marks the first full moon night in the Chinese calendar, marking the return of spring and symbolizing the reunion of family. Unfortunately, most people cannot celebrate with their loved ones at a family reunion because there\u2019s no public holiday for this festival. After the Lantern Festival, Chinese New Year taboos are no longer in effect and all New Year decorations are taken down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sea of brightly lit lanterns is, no doubt, quite a romantic scene truly a sight to see. The festive atmosphere, the performances, and the moonlight jointly created the best moments for a perfect date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are records in the Chinese literature showing evidence that the Lantern Festival is Chinese Valentine\u2019s Day. Thousands of ancient poems passed on from the Tang and Song dynasties depicted ardent love for their partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only was love inscribed in ancient poems, but there were wild, energetic, and romantic carnivals of the Lantern Festival.
