Succulents and Cactus Care Tips and Guide

Indoor plants, such as succulents and cacti are a delight to keep in your home.

Not only do they brighten up the environment with their humble, yet pretty appearance, they can also freshen up the air and lift moods. Luckily for those who have never developed a green thumb before, cactus and succulent requirements are fairly modest, so not a lot of effort is needed to keep them. However, there are some general pointers to look out for to keep your plant happy and healthy, and our staff here at Gift Flowers Hong Kong is here to give you the lowdown on some vital succulent care tips.

Tips and Guide on How to Take Care of Succulents and Cactus

1. How to find the right soil for your succulent: Because succulents and cacti requires soil that helps it drain, regular soil is not suitable. Search for cactus soil instead, or create your own succulent potting mix by mixing up regular potting soil with sand, pumice or perlite. The bigger particles allow water to drain. Be very gentle when repotting, as succulent roots are very fragile.

2. How to ensure your plant gets adequate light: Depending on the type of succulent, they usually require about six hours of full sun per day. However, young plants need to be introduced to sun exposure gradually, so make sure you have some shades or curtains handy. Don’t forget to rotate the succulents so that every side gets enough sunlight.

3. How often we should water the plant: Succulents thrive and drink up more water in spring and summer than they do in autumn and winter. If the top 3cm of the soil is dry, water it. But be careful and let the soil dry out slightly between your watering as overwatering could kill your plant.

4. How to water your succulent: For your succulent, choose a container such as a terracotta pot, that provides good drainage so that excess water can flow out and the plant doesn’t rot. When watering your plant, the soil should be soaked before the water is allowed to drain through the drainage holes. Use a watering can instead of spray bottles as the later can cause the plant to have brittle roots and mouldy leaves.

5. How to keep your succulent clean: Succulents grow well a good, clean environment. A big part of succulent care is to keep it from picking up too much dust, which can greatly inhibit its growth. To get rid of the dust, gently wipe its leaves and spines with a damp cloth and brush away small particles using a soft paintbrush.

6. How to get rid of bugs: Indoor plants generally don’t have a pest problem, but you may have to get rid of bugs such as gnats and mealybugs. This could be due to overwatering or overfertilising. You can deal with them by first moving the succulent away from other affected plants and spraying the soil with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol.
