Chinese Valentine’s Day or Qixi Festival

The seventh day of the seventh month on the Chinese calendar is celebrated as the Chinese Valentine’s Day. According to Chinese mythology, it is believed that on this day the fairy and an oxherd meet on the bridge of magpies in the sky. Niulang and Zhinv are known as the Romeo and Juliet of China. NiuLang was the 7th Daughter of the Emperor and she was a wonderful weaver; she was lovingly called the Weaving Maid. Whereas Zhinv was an orphaned cowherd who owned nothing but an ox which was really an immortal from the Heavens. Their story is known by every child and it has been passed on through generations for years.  It is a very famous fairy tale in China. Chinese Valentine’s day is also celebrated as ‘Qixi Festival’. This year it will be celebrated in Hong Kong on 7th August. Next year it is expected to be around 25th August 2020.

Traditions followed

Like other Asian countries there is a strong wind of westernization in China too, most of the festivals have now become over commercialized.  However, there are some strong traditions which the Chinese people have retained.  For Chinese Valentine’s, the tradition is about threading a needle. On the evening of Qixi, women have to speedily thread a needle under the bright moonlight.

People also worship Zhinv and Niulang, they offer a table loaded with tea, wine, fruits, longans, red dates, hazelnuts, peanuts, and melon seeds to Zhinv. When evening comes, young women sit across the table and display their needlework and worship the model of Zhinv which is placed on the table. They pray for happy life and a good husband. For worshipping Niulang, children pick bunches of colorful wildflowers and hang them on the horns of oxen.

Though many traditional customs have changed or forgotten over the years, the legend of Niu Lang and Zhinv is still popular and is loved by all the generations.

Many old women in Hong Kong, worship the ‘seven sisters’ on this day of Qixi Festival. The seven sisters known to aid and bless couples wanting to start families. There are 2 ‘Seven Sisters Temples’ in Hong Kong, one is on the laidback island of Peng Chau and the other one is in Sai Kung.

Forbidden Gifts

Always remember, never to gift a pair of shoes or umbrella to any Chinese person for any festival or occasion. The reason is they find these gifts inauspicious and gifting them a bad omen. “Umbrella’ and “Shoes” when pronounced in China are similar to the word “break up” and “packing up your love”.
